Density and Graviton Perturbations in the Cosmic Microwave Background * Typeset Using Revt E X

چکیده
We evaluate and compare the gravitational wave and density perturbation contributions to the cosmic microwave background radiation, on the basis of the same power law inflationary model. The inflation to radiation transition is treated in this paper as instantaneous, but a model is constructed to allow for a smooth transition from the radiation to the matter dominated eras. The equations are numerically investigated and integrated, without any basic approximations being made. Use is made of the synchronous gauge, with appropriate gauge invariant variables, thus eliminating any confusion arising from unphysical gauge modes. We find a nonnegligible gravitational wave contribution, which becomes dominant for a power law expansion with exponent q < 13. We also explore the dependence of our results with the main characteristic of the transition region, its length. 98.80.Cq,04.30.-w Typeset using REVTEX Research partially funded by NATO Collaborative Research Grant CRG no. 920129

Causality and the Power Spectrum Typeset Using Revt E X 1
We nd constraints on the generation of super-causal-horizon energy perturbations from a smooth initial state, under a simple physical scheme. We quantify these constraints by placing the upper limit c ' 3:0d H on the wavelength at which the power spectrum turns over to k 4 behavior. This means that sub-horizon processes can generate signiicant power on scales further outside the horizon than on...

In an intriguing recent paper, Crittenden and Turok proposed cross-correlating the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with tracers of the matter density to probe the existence of a cosmological constant. Here I emphasize that a similar cross-correlation arises in an open Universe and, depending on the redshift distribution of the tracer population and the matter density, may be comparable to or ...

If the large-angular-scale anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background radiation is caused by the long-wavelength cosmological perturbations of quantum mechanical origin, they are, most likely, gravitational waves, rather than density perturbations or rotational perturbations. متن کاملConstraints on Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity from Density Perturbations in Inflationary Cosmology
Spectra of density perturbations produced during chaotic inflation in scalartensor theories of gravity are calculated, taking both adiabatic and isocurvature modes into account. Comparing the predicted spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies with the one observed by the COBE-DMR we calculate constraints on the parameters of these theories, which turn out to be stronge...

Observations show that the universe is nearly isotropic on very large scales. It is much more difficult to show that the universe is radially homogeneous— that is, independent of distance from us—or equivalently, that the universe is isotropic about distant points. This is usually taken as an axiom, since otherwise we would occupy a special position. Here we consider several empirical arguments...
